The Listening Loop

An improvised musical dialogue on resistance, adaptation and mutual learning.
A live piano–viola performance by Srečno at Wetsus Discover Day.

The Listening Loop is a live piano–viola improvisation by Srečno, performed by Zarja Medved and Elmar C. Fuchs during Wetsus Discover Day—the annual gathering of the Wetsus research and innovation community.

The performance responds to Harro Maat’s keynote From laboratory to society, which explores how people respond to new technologies and how scientists and technologies adapt in return through recurring cycles of resistance, collaboration and learning.

The piano introduces a musical idea, which the viola may question, interrupt or resist. Each response changes what follows: proposals are reformulated, roles reverse, and new patterns emerge through repeated cycles of tension, listening and adaptation.

The players learn from one another and gradually develop a shared musical language by allowing each other’s responses to transform how they play. The improvisation is intended to mirror the journey of technology from laboratory to society: people interpret, challenge and reshape new developments, while scientists and technologies adapt in return. In both processes, mutual learning emerges through attentive exchange.
